    Who may benefit?

Most people can benefit from beginning a regular practice of mindfulness, abcmind guided visualizations or meditation work. For example, there is much research demonstrating significant improvements in overall wellbeing that consistent meditators experience. Most people however do not take the time to actually practice this skill and find it difficult to sit still alone without guidance. That is why we are offering weekly classes as a starting place for you to add the practice of doing a calming routine to your larger life. This should only be done if it “feels right” to you after giving it a try. If you choose to incorporate this into your life, great. If not, that is fine too. This is about finding what works best for you, be it meditation, a gym membership, walking with friends, etc.

Why phone-based meetings, visualizations and meditation?

The number one reason is because it works well. Also, the phone group format combines the anonymity and comfort of your own space with the great value of group energy and support. Participants are more likely to take the time for themselves if the barriers to joining a group are reduced. When we do not have to travel, or have the discomfort of being in front of others or the hassle of getting “dressed-up” and out the door, we are more likely to engage this time for ourselves. The second reason is that our guided visualizations are well suited to the active-listening skills format of a phone call. Lastly, we can keep prices affordable and include the many people around the country and internationally who join us. If you live in either New York or Oregon, in-person one-on-one work is also available. Please call 888-808-8909 if you are interested in a “Nature Walk and Talk” or office visit.

Are there any downsides or possible side-effects to participating in these practices?

There are no guarantees with any kind of physical or mental skills practice. While most people report benefits, some people may experience strain, stress, anxiety, sadness, increased emotional volatility or other reactions as they enter and practice a state of greater relaxation and openness. This may be natural for some people and often passes. As with any new endeavor, if you find that you are experiencing discomfort that is too excessive, listen to yourself and cease participation or speak with us. This may not be a good fit for you. The most important concept we begin with is “never do something that feels incorrect or you suspect is not right for you,” no matter what someone tells you in regards to possible benefits. With ABCMIND practices, you are the teacher to whom we stand in support.

At ABCMIND & Company we learn to listen to ourselves and what we need. This kind of listening is new to most people, and it takes time. Other than working hard to satisfy clients with our services, we cannot and do not make any guarantees in regards to mental or physical improvements and leave all decisions as to what is best for you with you. Each of us is solely responsible for our wellbeing and abcmind services are offered on a “take at your own risk” basis. We strongly recommend not driving or using any equipment or cooking immediately following or while participating in sessions. It is also a good idea to consult with your physician before beginning any new exercise regimen.

    What is mindfulness?

Mindfulness practice is described as training your attention on the present moment with an attitude toward one’s experience characterized by curiosity, openness, and acceptance. It can be described as a calm awareness of one's body functions, feelings and the content of your consciousness. Mindfulness has been inherited from eastern meditative traditions and is increasingly being used in western psychology to support the alleviation of a variety of mental and physical conditions including but not limited to attentional and emotional/anxiety disorders. In certain cases it has also been found to be helpful in the prevention of relapse in depression. While it is used by "professionals," this skill set belongs to everyone who breaths and in no way requires anything other than a sincere interest.
